Undeniably in vogue, Bali could be considered a victim of its own success. And in a sense, that’s quite true. But that should not be a reason to miss out on fabulous landscapes, a captivating culture and, let us not forget, some well-deserved moments of relaxation. Fortunately, Bali still holds a few secrets - Belimbing, Munduk and Sidemen - can be explored peacefully and far from the crowds by taking the road less travelled. Because, despite the rush of tourism, the island has managed to remain true to itself, revealing a preserved, expansive and volcanic landscape to visitors who know where to look - an ideal setting to explore nature, closer to authentic experiences and far away from clichés. Although some of the clichés do hold true: terraced paddy fields, a photogenic showcase of masterful agriculture, but also thieving monkeys, devout Hinduism, and stunning coral reefs. The three Balinese inland stop-offs, far from the frenzy of the coastal tourist areas, pass through charming villages surrounded by lush greenery, waterfalls, and cafe plantations where discreet temples are hidden from view. Everywhere, life follows the pace of the Balinese and visitors will enjoy interacting, and understanding, instead of simply being a bystander. However, there is still room for contemplation, which can be enjoyed endlessly on Gili Asahan, the final stop-off on the Island of the Gods - with its immaculate beaches and emerald waves. This little slice of paradise is a charming link between Bali and its neighbour Lombok, where nature on land and underwater reveals itself in its purest form, where one returns to the source. You can settle in one of the island’s most secluded areas, the Ekas Peninsula, where things are of course changing, but very gradually - the roads were still just dirt tracks only a few years ago. This is a peaceful region, with unexpected panoramas, dry and carpeted with tobacco plantations and maize fields - and mosques, absolutely everywhere! The beaches there are beautiful and wild, the villages authentic and timeless. The days are filled with outdoor activities: swimming, kayaking, surfing, walks, etc. Proof that even the most popular destinations can still offer us an intimate welcome.

Your Trip

The logistics are designed to be seamless, leaving you free to explore and meet new people. It must also be adapted to what you see, to the landscapes you travel through. Your accommodation has been carefully selected to blend seamlessly into the surroundings and, above all, to respect them: organic restaurants, natural ventilation, local products, social programmes, solar energy, etc. That doesn't stop you from enjoying comfortable rooms, pools, and spas nestled in lush vegetation where butterflies flutter by, allowing your thoughts to flutter along with them. The plane, essential for reaching these remote regions, leaves you in Denpasar. You will then travel by car with a driver or by boat when necessary. As for the various activities that make up your itinerary, they have been designed to bring you ever closer to the daily life of the locals and to nature: visiting an organic farm, hiking through plantations, waterfalls and paddy fields, exploring hidden temples, and spending a day off the coast of Lombok on a traditional fishing boat. If, despite all this, your curiosity is still not satisfied, you have the contact details of our on-site Concierge, who will be delighted to add things to your itinerary, or assist you in the event of a minor setback.

Itinerary

100% customisable for you

Spend the night on board and arrive the next day.

Upon arrival, you will be welcomed and transferred privately to Belimbing, where you will stay for three nights in an ecolodge. Committed to respecting the environment and local communities, the ecolodge welcomes its guests in the heart of nature. You will stay in a beautiful room that cleverly combines traditional craftsmanship and sophisticated decor. Moving between indoors and outdoors is easy, allowing you to fully enjoy the surroundings: rice fields stretching as far as the eye can see, a swimming pool set in a lush tropical garden and, on the horizon, the Balinese volcanoes standing guard.

Far off the beaten track, Belimbing provides an ideal setting for leisurely, interesting explorations. Don’t miss the opportunity to explore the small paths meandering through the terraced rice fields, cleverly carved into the hillsides. This landscape is spectacular, especially when the mist slowly rises above the palm trees and the fields are still wet with dew. Follow the irrigation canals or paths lined with coffee and clove trees and you will stumble across villagers working in the fields or carrying baskets of herbs on their heads. They usually enjoy chatting with visitors and are happy to answer questions. And just around one of the bends, you might discover a small waterfall like the one at Sade, hidden by dense vegetation - a perfect spot for a refreshing break. If you notice smoke rising from a hut in a hamlet, or hear the gentle tapping of wood, one of the locals could well be making palm sugar or roasting local coffee. Some families really enjoy opening their doors and sharing their ancestral knowledge. Last but not least, if your path takes you to a sanctuary hidden among the trees, such as the Luhur Mekori Temple, make sure you stop off to explore. Banyan roots and birdsong set the scene for meditation. What a perfect end to a perfect day spent discovering this tranquil island on foot.

On your itinerary - A private tour of Belimbing. Set off on a guided tour of the remarkable terraced rice fields surrounding the village and familiarise yourself with subak - an ingenious irrigation system specific to Bali. Stop off at a farm, just a short distance away. Meet with farm staff keen to share the best practices of organic farming with you, in the fields, surrounded by animals. Following a lunch including freshly picked fruit, head to a nearby waterfall and Buddhist temple.

Private transfer to Munduk, then stay for two nights in a small hotel surrounded by nature, which we are keen to preserve. Organic restaurant, training communities in the manufacture of eco-bricks from non-recyclable plastic... The hotel has even set up its own waste management system and banned plastic bottles. Rest assured, none of this comes at the expense of comfort and the intimate setting, where there are just a dozen bungalows and villas set in a relaxed atmosphere. There are open spaces and the warmth of carved wood embellished with objects found here and there. Guests can enjoy a Zen retreat in the middle of rice fields with yoga classes, meditation and spa treatments. You can also relax in the pool or enjoy a game of pétanque, unless you prefer to take time out for a massage, read a book or simply do nothing at all.

At an altitude of 1,000 metres, the small village of Munduk overlooks the island's inland valleys and Lakes Buyan and Tamblingan. Here, you are off the beaten track, where the Balinese way of life has remained intact. It is easy to chat with the locals, who are always welcoming and smiling.
On your itinerary - A hike through the waterfalls and plantations of the Munduk region, which has the most fertile land on the island. You will walk through rice fields and forests, coffee plantations and clove plantations, with stunning panoramic views of the valley and Buyan and Tamblingan lakes as a backdrop. Each stop is a great opportunity to meet the communities of traditional villages.

Private transfer to the Sidemen region and check-in for two nights in an accomodation featuring typical Balinese architecture and décor. The best view of Mount Agung can be enjoyed from the poolside, overlooking the terraced rice fields. You will stay in a pretty thatched villa where light, natural colours and the play of light have been given pride  of place.

The village of Sidemen provides an ideal starting point for strolling through the vegetable or flower plantations. Begin your day by taking in the sights and sounds of the local market. Marvel at the abundance of home-grown produce used to make local culinary delights before discovering the iconic yellow bridge at Tukad Yeh Unda or visiting a ceramics workshop, a highly revered regional craft. And if, perchance, you spot a weaving sign outside one of the workshops, be sure to stop off and witness the weavers at work. Gain an insight into the secrets of the Sidemen songket, a fabric that is instantly recognisable because of its distinctive colours and patterns.
On your itinerary - The Gianyar Secret Temples
. Led by a guide, embark on a short walk through the rice fields to a sacred temple dedicated to purification. This is where traditional offerings are made - a daily ritual in the life of the Balinese people. The tour continues with two other lesser-known temples, including one over a thousand years old, nestling in a lush green valley interspersed by a meandering river. Stop off and savour a typical local lunch along the way.

Transfer to Serangan Pier in a private vehicle and ride a speedboat to the unspoilt island of Gili Asahan. Then transfer to one of three perfectly secluded villas for a three-night stay. Enjoy the garden view from your room and relax on your own private balcony. In keeping with the serenity of the coastline, the interior décor is understated yet tasteful. The rooms echo the simplicity of a back-to-nature lifestyle with no excesses, but are far from basic. The emphasis is very much on outdoor living for private and shared spaces alike. This comes as no surprise as the scenery is a real feast for the eyes!

A small island to the south-west of Lombok, Gili Asahan is a genuine paradise of unspoilt nature and fascinating marine life. Relax on white sandy beaches and swim in crystal-clear waters, or how about snorkelling or watching marine wildlife? Enjoy the occasional siesta, or try meditation or yoga… the choice is yours! Optional - Why not embark on a sunset cruise or a private snorkelling excursion?

Private transfer to the pier and crossing to Pantai Kores on the island of Lombok. Another transfer to the Ekas Peninsula on the south-east coast, where you will stay for three nights in the heart of a 55-hectare forest reserve. Here lies a small cluster of wooden bungalows - just 11 in total - inspired by the traditional fishing camps of the Sasak people. Set on the edge of a pristine beach, these small buildings combine Robinson Crusoe spirit with the rustic charm typical of eastern Indonesia. The resort is completely off the grid and focuses on self-sufficiency as fresh water is provided by a mixture of desalinated seawater and nearby springs, while electricity is supplied by solar panels and a generator operating on a limited schedule. The restaurant offers a simple but refined culinary experience of fish and seafood caught daily by locals and vegetables and farm produce showcased in recipes with Asian and Western influences.

The very few roads on the Ekas Peninsula were mere dirt tracks until recently. Although the landscape is gradually changing, there are no signs of the rapid development witnessed in other parts of Indonesia. The southern part of the island is dry and strewn with tobacco plantations and maize fields, not to mention mosques. The beaches are beautiful and unspoilt, and the villages authentic and timeless. Daily life is punctuated by outdoor activities including swimming, kayaking, surfing, cycling and walking. Relax and unwind in the spa.

On your itinerary - Enjoy a day at sea, off the Lombok coast, as part of a project dedicated to protecting the ocean. An Australian woman - a passionate defender of ocean flora and fauna - has launched a Foundation in Lombok to protect Indonesian sharks. The strategy is to offer fishermen an alternative source of income - tourism - while training them and raising awareness of the impact of fishing on marine life. Don a mask and snorkel and set off from the southern coast of Lombok with the fishermen in a traditional fishing boat to explore the seabeds - home to countless species of colourful tropical fish. A day like no other.

Transfer to Lombok Airport and international return flight. Night on board, arrival the next day.

And for starters…

A few days in Kuala Lumpur

To reach Indonesia, you can travel via Kuala Lumpur. An opportunity to spend a few days in the fascinating Malaysian capital, a city that leaves no one unimpressed, whatever their preferences. You will find charm in the eclectic mix of buildings, from the old train station to Menara Tower and the Petronas Towers, and peace in the urban parks Titiwangsa Lake Garden and Perdana Botanical Gardens. Food enthusiasts and curious travellers will also delight in the multiplicity of influences that come together on the plate. A genuine trip within a trip.

A few days in Singapore

While Singapore is a city-state, it is above all an archipelago. Perhaps that is where its distinctive character and unique atmosphere come from. The main island, Pulau Ujong, is home to one of the world’s most fascinating cities, a place of dreams, myths and legends. Yet some people give it little credit. It is true that Singapore keeps its secrets well, and it is easy to only remember its ultra-modern skyline, a symbol of incredible economic dynamism. Yet, one must look back, to where Singapore’s multicultural history is revealed: in Chinatown, at the heart of the Malay quarter, in Hindu temples, or even at the tables of the famous hawker centres, those popular canteens. Contrary to popular belief, nothing obliges us to take an interest in technology or to adopt an extravagant lifestyle while we are there. A bicycle, some chicken rice, and interesting encounters. That’s Singapore, too.
