Itinerary highlights

  • Exploring the north of the Iberian Peninsula with your children, under your own steam and at your own pace
  • Staying at beautiful, well-located, family friendly hotels
  • The Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, a fishing trip in Llanes, exploring Porto with a local, sailing on the Douro: quite an itinerary!
  • Mobile app, top recommendations, on site concierges: the extra Voyageurs touch
This grand tour takes in two neighbouring, complementary countries: Spain and Portugal. To the south of the Pyrenees, at the heart of Iberian culture and traditions, each has its own endearing personality. Go there with the family - both countries appeal to all generations - and in fine weather, to spend some time exploring. The road trip starts in Bilbao. The futuristic curves of the Guggenheim Museum quickly come to mind. The permanent collection and temporary exhibitions straddle the 20th and 21st centuries side by side. Walk around the titanium-clad building to take in the Basque city as a whole: Mount Artxanda, the cathedral and the Castanos neighbourhood. The journey continues through Asturias, where you discover the village of Llanes and then Pontevedro. The concept of green Spain may come as a surprise, yet with the window down, your gaze takes in a palette of colours and landscapes. You cross the border without even noticing, and then your encounter with Portugal begins in a city on a human scale: Porto. Its historic centre is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Still in the Douro Valley, head towards Sabrosa, in the heart of the vineyards. Taking some time to wander among hilltop villages, white churches and terraced vineyards, to appreciate the calm spread by the river, is a must. Returning to Spain you reach Castile and Leon, and more specifically Salamanca, where life flows around the Plaza Mayor and the University. Head leisurely north for one last stop in Burgos, a city rich in unparalleled history and heritage, exemplified by its Gothic cathedral, whose construction began in the 13th century. From start to finish, this journey promises contrasting landscapes, attractions steeped in history and exciting adventures - all in the sun.

Your journey

For your own comfort you travel in your own car, as the whole family is used to it. We have chosen your hotels for their location and charm, but also because they are family-friendly. Parents and children are not always on the same wavelength when it comes to planning an itinerary, so we have taken matters into our own hands and arranged a few highlights: tickets for the Guggenheim Museum await you in Bilbao; you will meet fishermen in the port of Llanes; a local guide from Porto will take you on a stroll through their city; and you will have tickets for the famous Lello Bookstore. A private cruise in a rabelo on the Douro is also arranged. And, our on site Concierges are available at any time to deal with your last-minute requests and needs.

Itinerary

100% customisable for you

Upon arrival in Bilbao, settle in for two nights at a hotel just a short walk from the Guggenheim Museum, the emblem of the city. Its architecture draws inspiration from the works of Basque sculptor Eduardo Chillida - a unique style that is expressed through shapes, materials, colours and details. You’ll soon be struck by the vast hall and the glass lifts, which offer a lovely view.
Already planned: your entry tickets for the Guggenheim Museum. While the exhibitions change regularly, some works remain on permanent display. The museum’s collection is among the leading institutions of contemporary art. You can admire works by Jeff Koons, Yves Klein, Eduardo Chillida, Louise Bourgeois and many others - enough to spark the curiosity of adults and children alike.

Not to be missed - Ribera Market. This is among the largest food markets in Europe. Its proximity to the historic centre makes visiting easy. You step into an Art Deco-style building where stalls and pintxo bars are lined up. The main restaurant offers a wide selection of tapas and Basque specialities, such as kokotxas (hake cheeks with garlic and olive oil) and txipirones (cuttlefish served with ink sauce).

Drive to Llanes, in Asturias. Stay for two nights in a comfortable apartment, spacious enough for the whole family. Its balcony overlooks the Mijares valley, with the Sierra del Cuera in the background. The swimming pool offers the perfect setting for a refreshing swim - ideal at the end of the day. To extend the experience, head to the restaurant, which skilfully serves dishes that blend tradition and modernity.

In your itinerary: fishing in Llanes port. The whole family playfully dives into the maritime origins of Llanes with a private guide. You will discover how fishing works in the region and how fish are sold at the markets. To conclude this activity, the children are invited to take part in a hands-on workshop.

Drive to Pontevedra, nestled at the end of the estuary of the same name. Stay for two nights in a new, spacious and elegant apartment. You’ll quickly feel at home here, before diving into the sun-drenched swimming pool.
Things to see and do - Enjoy the absence of vehicles inside the village; admire the Basilica of Santa María la Mayor and the old town; count the Gothic houses along the narrow streets; spend a day visiting the nearby megalithic monuments or the nearby beaches…
Optional extra - Arousa Island by bike.

Cross the border and continue along the road to Porto. Stay for three nights in a modern-design apartment. The interiors are dominated by blue, reminiscent of the azulejos. Make the most of the mild temperatures on the balcony. The fitted kitchen lets you make yourself at home. Its central location is another advantage: you are just a short walk away from the main heritage sites.
Optional extra - Porto’s historic centre by bike.

In your itinerary - Porto in the footsteps of a local. Accompanied by a local who knows the city like the back of their hand, you set off on foot to explore Porto’s popular and contemporary sides, as you so desire. The meeting happens naturally and nothing is planned in advance - the walk is improvised according to everyone’s preferences. A delightful way to live like a family from Porto - all together!

Already planned - your tickets for the Lello Bookshop. This is described as one of the most beautiful bookshops in the world and is said to have even inspired the author of Harry Potter. A true local institution, the bookstore was founded in 1906. Inside, the neo-Gothic architecture features a magnificent glass roof that echoes an impressive carved wooden staircase. And the shelves reach up to the ceiling!

Drive to Sabrosa and stay for two nights in the heart of a vast vineyard - a true invitation to experience the Douro art of living. Inside the walls, different styles mix with natural materials like stone and wood. The whole place exudes incredible charm, and you feel perfectly at ease there.

In your itinerary - a private cruise on the Douro in a rabelo boat. The rabelo, a boat used for river transport, carried wine barrels from the upstream wine regions to the production cities: Porto and Vila Nova de Gaia. The walk lets you enjoy different viewpoints over Pinhão, the surrounding vineyards and their quintas. The route takes you through one of the most beautiful stretches of the river, hidden from the coastal roads, all the way to Quinta da Romaneira.
Optional extra - The Douro through the ages.

Return to the Spanish side: drive to Salamanca and settle in for two nights in a former convent turned charming hotel. It enjoys a privileged location in the heart of the historic centre. The spacious, very comfortable rooms overlook the cathedral, the “Patio de los Olivas” - the olive patio - or the cloister. A special mention is merited for the attentive welcome and the quality of the breakfast, served in the garden on fine days.

Things to see and do - Compare the architecture of the new and old cathedrals; meet up at the Plaza Mayor; picture yourself as a student at one of the oldest universities in Europe; photograph the Casa de las Conchas, a house covered in shells; wander through the Art Nouveau and Art Deco museum; sample the local chorizo and wine…
Optional extra - Salamanca by bike, in private.

Drive to Burgos and check in for a final night in the historic centre. The building housing the hotel stands against a bell tower. The rooms show a discreet elegance. The much-appreciated hotel restaurant highlights traditional Spanish cuisine.
The artistic heritage of this stop along the Way of St James is considerable. It is immediately obvious even on the shortest walk in the city. Don’t forget to step inside Saint Mary’s Cathedral to admire the interior of this monumental Gothic masterpiece.

Make the return journey in your own vehicle.

À la carte

This suggested itinerary can be customisable down to the smallest detail, including duration, stops and content. An à la carte menu of experiences is also available to create a journey that reflects who you are.

Arousa Island by bike

Connected to the mainland by a single road, Arousa Island is a small natural paradise. It is home to the Carreiron Natural Park, where a large population of herons thrives. The best way to discover this charming little island is definitely by bike. The cycle path round the perimeter of the island means you can reach even the most remote spots, such as the Punta Cabalo lighthouse, the port of O Xufre and the Con do Forno viewpoint.

The Douro through the ages

With its source in the mountains of old Castile in Spain, the Douro flows across Portugal from east to west for nearly 240 km (150 miles). It is regulated by impressive dams and gigantic locks - the tallest in Europe. With a local guide, embark on a journey through the ages, aboard an historical train. On the itinerary: the village of Tua and its steep wooden walkways, a "Cantoneiro" house, wine tasting, and finally a short cruise on board a rabelo.

Salamanca by bike

A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Salamanca's attractions stretch from the Roman bridge to the Zamora Gate. Its university is one of the oldest in Europe. It sits right in the heart of the historic centre. You tour the city's neighbourhoods by bike, making a few stops along the way. One stop is the historic centre, with its impressive Romanesque, Gothic, Moorish, Renaissance and Baroque buildings.
