You will hear it told on a journey through India: Krishna, with his blue skin, loved Radha, who had fair skin. Unhappy at being darker than his beloved, Krishna sulked – until the mothers of the gods, like all mothers, found a solution. She told him to throw colour onto Radha’s face. Each year, all of India celebrates this story. It is Holi, the festival where anything goes. Women in elegant saris drink bhang, temple crowds behave like rock-group groupies, everyone becomes a moving harlequin and the ground itself turns into a vast abstract painting. Happy Holi – India is magnificently mad, to our great delight.

Travel to India by region

Ladakh

Travelling to Ladakh, the “land of high passes”, is to get a taste of Tibet and come face to face with its peaks. Perched at an average altitude of over 5,300 metres (17,388 feet), the region is surrounded by the Himalayas to the south and the Karakoram to the north. A kingdom of high-altitude trekking, Ladakh offers a unique playground for seasoned hikers. Your steps will lead you to the monasteries of Hemis, Lamayuru and Thiksey, and up to Leh, the regional capital, or to the banks of the Indus or Pangong Lake.

Northern India & the Ganges

A journey to Northern India begins with Kolkata, the city of arts and letters. An essential stop for any artist aspiring to national recognition. Film festivals, exhibitions, theatre, and dance all bring life to the city of Rabindranath Tagore and Satyajit Ray. The journey continues along the Bay of Bengal, in Odisha: land of tribes, temples... and silkworms! A trip through Bhubaneswar, Puri and Khajuraho for the magnificence of their temples: the Sun Temple, the Erotic Temple, the temple dedicated to the god Jagannath, the avatar of Vishnu. Rayagada, Jeypore, Kunduli for the tribal villages lost in the hills and high plateaus. And a detour through the Tibetan enclaves where prayer flags flutter towards the sky. A brilliant testament to the splendour of the Great Mughals, the Taj Mahal reflects the perfection of Indo-Islamic architecture. Varanasi, the great holy city of Hindus, famous for its ghats along the Ganges, is one of the oldest cities in the world. For centuries, pilgrims have come here seeking salvation and spiritual comfort. Mumbai, finally, the gateway to the south, the “city that never sleeps”.

Rajasthan

A journey to Rajasthan draws you close to the fantastical and opulent world, ever present today, of princes, maharajas and their palaces. Jaipur, the State capital, enchants with its pink façades epitomised by the Hawa Mahal and its picturesque bazaars. Jaisalmer, the golden city crowned by its imposing fortress, remains an important pilgrimage site for Jains, while Jodhpur reveals its maze of Brahmin houses with blue façades and its bustling, fragrant grand bazaar. Finally, Udaipur embodies the oasis of Rajasthan at the edge of the desert, and offers the region’s largest palace as well as whitewashed houses.

Southern India & Kerala

A journey to South India is to experience the heart of Hinduism and the several-thousand-year-old Dravidian culture. This southern triangle promises a stay focused on culture, spirituality and spice gardens. Kerala, so green, its tropical climate and pepper having drawn Vasco da Gama to the Malabar Coast in 1498. Tamil Nadu: its religious fervour, the fabrics spun from Madurai to Chennai, its former trading posts, Karaikal and Puducherry, and Bharatanatyam, the classical Indian dance. Karnataka, an open-air museum with its UNESCO-listed temples, cafe plantations, and sandalwood – a vital component of religious rituals. Not forgetting Hampi and Badami.
