Itinerary highlights

  • Sulawesi, also known as Celebes, is a marine paradise for adventurous divers, where you can explore a teeming and colourful world of silence.
  • Five days of cultural trekking and encounters in the Toraja region: it’s planned and in private!
  • Extend your trip to another Indonesian island or even to Singapore: it’s possible.
  • Carbon absorption, Concierge service, portable Wi-Fi: the extra Voyageurs touch
Among the thousands of islands that make up the Indonesian archipelago, Sulawesi (also known as Celebes), east of Borneo, is certainly the least known of the larger ones. Yet travellers here gleam the full natural and cultural diversity of a country still often confined to just a few well-trodden paths. Sulawesi unfolds in an atypical silhouette, stretching into several large peninsulas. It is a true kaleidoscope of landscapes, ranging from mountains to tropical jungles from rice paddies to pristine beaches bordered by coral reefs. The gateway to the island, ,Makassar is also the largest city in eastern Indonesia and the connecting point between the western and eastern islands of the archipelago. After a brief stop to get a feel for the island, we fly toRantepao, in the Toraja region, home to communities with deeply rooted ancestral traditions. These “mountain people” build astonishing houses on stilts covered with long bamboo roofs. Their curved lines evoke that of local dugout canoes or horns of the buffalo, a sacred animal believed to connect the world of the living with that of the dead. Buffalo sacrifice lies at the heart of Toraja funeral rites, and the rows of horns displayed on the façades signal the noble status of a house. Yet there is nothing sombre about the villages you pass through. Instead you encounter a sense of solidarity expressed through the generations. After a few days in these unique lands, head to Manado , in North Sulawesi. The mountains fade into the distance, giving way to an enchanting coastline. Turquoise lagoons, colourful coral reefs, swaying palm trees and fine sandy beaches create the setting for the final days of your trip. A paradise for divers, whether occasional or expert, and a celebration of letting go.

With a few more days… A stopover in Singapore

Singapore is a city fully in tune with the contemporary world, but you still begin with a retro classic: a Singapore Sling at the Raffles hotel bar. Then stroll along Clarke Quay, where the old warehouses and junks have been transformed into shops, restaurants and night-clubs. Eat chicken rice at one of those hawker centres that feed Singaporean employees every day. The National Orchid Garden in the botanical garden is an enchanting haven of peace. At Gardens by the Bay, aesthetics, educational ambition and major ecological projects come together to raise awareness and delight visitors. The Parkview Square building (DP Architects, 2002) is a stunning revival of Art Deco style. The Dravidian gopura (1925) within the Sri Mariamman Hindu temple, stands out with its polychrome statues. In Chinatown, the Taoist temples charm with their elegantly upturned roofs.
