Explore the desert and its oases, art and craft galleries and enjoy the clear waters that fringe the island of Djerba. Throughout this unique journey, southern Tunisia’s finest treasures unfold before you. With most tourists flocking to the north of the country, you'll enjoy a rare sense of tranquillity. A direct flight takes you to the island ofDjerba, connected to the mainland by a causeway. In the medina of Erriadh, tranquillity reigns. Its hinterland follows the slow pace of age-old trades such as oil mills, weaving workshops and pottery studios. The following day takes you to the Berber village of Tamezret, one of the oldest in the region. Its dry stone houses blend into the landscape, giving the village the feel of a medieval town. Then comes Tozeur, near the immense salt lake of Chott el Jerid. In the heart of one of the world’s most famous oases, the city is home to a vast palm grove where several hundred thousand trees produce the country’s best dates. You then head back towards the sea to reachTijma, carved into the mountain slopes and ringed by dunes. Most of its houses are troglodyte dwellings, typical of this region in southern Tunisia. You end your trip on Djerba, spending your final night there before leaving. Your suitcase may contain a few items found in the souks, but above all you will take back memories of the vast desert, fascinating encounters and a sense of calm.

Your trip

If you love discovering great places, this journey is made for you. Your stopovers have been selected for their charm, unusual character or views. In Djerba, right in the heart of the Erriadh medina, you will stay in a dar with an intimate atmosphere, perfectly living up to its name as a “guest house”. Shaded patios, an azure pool and a hammam create a delightful combination. In Tamezret, amid the dunes, a large stone house welcomes you. In Tozeur, you will stay in a more contemporary setting, where every window looks out over the desert. In Tijma, the experience is more traditional, with rooms carved directly into the earth and meals shared with the owner. All restaurants showcase local produce and know-how. We have added two highlights to this Tunisian journey, so you do not miss the essentials. First, around Tozeur, you spend a whole day exploring the oases of Chebika, Tamerza and Midèsa traditional cooking class. Throughout the trip, logistics are seamless. You take a direct flight to Djerba, rental car is available from the first to the last day, and, as always, our Concierge is reachable at any time.

Itinerary

100% customisable for you

Upon arrival, collect your rental car and settle in for the night in the heart of the Erriadh medina. The original architecture has been preserved in the guest-house. Patios and terraces lead to a maze of relaxing spaces: two pools offer added privacy, and a brightly-lit lounge is perfect for a reading break. Not to mention the rooms with their poetic names, where the alcoves trace a kind of secret geography. The experience would not be complete without a visit to the hammam. This one is traditional and offers a range of regenerating treatments.

Drive to Tamezret. Settle in for the night in a beautifully restored Berber house. White stone defines the character and charm of the decor. Far from feeling austere, this mineral setting is warm and luminous. The rooms are cosy and, like the rest of the house, radiate a rare sense of authenticity. The inn’s table enjoys earned a well-deserved reputation: vegetables, meats and seafood are carefully sourced, and the Tunisian dishes change according to the chef’s inspiration.

Drive to Tozeur. On the way, you can stop in the village of Douz, where the main resource is date palm. Its oases and souk are not to be missed.
Three-night stay in the middle of the desert. The hotel's architecture offers a contemporary and graphic interpretation of Mediterranean style. Every detail is designed with the traveller’s comfort in mind. The palette — white, beige, brown, ochre, touches of sisal — responds beautifully to the surrounding environment. The furnishings show an understated elegance. The rooms are generously sized and very well equipped. And when it’s time to dine, you’re spoiled for choice between fusion cuisine, Asian flavours, or traditional Tunisian dishes. Everything is delivered with impeccable professionalism. The spa meets the highest standards, pleasantly appointed, and staffed by first-rate practitioners. You can continue to relax in the different outdoor pools.

Scheduled - A day in the mountain oases, in private. With a guide, you stroll through the palm groves in the mountain oasis region - Chebika, fragile and lost among ochre rocks; the Midès canyon, with its layers of stratified rock shaped by erosion; and Tamerza, whose lush greenery contrasts with the aridity of the surrounding mountains. You then settle in the shade of the date palms, on mergoum rugs, for a relaxing picnic.
Optional - Oung Jmel and Nefta, in private.

Drive to Tijma. Overnight stay in a unique guest-house: a troglodyte dwelling in the foothills of the Dahar mountains. The rooms are dug directly into the earth. Inside there is no internet / Wi-Fi or phone, but simple comfort that does not detract from the originality of the place. In the evening, guests gather around a large table with the owner, who is happy to share the history of the lesser-known villages nearby. Zraoua, Tamezret and Haddej.

Drive to the island of Djerba and return the rental car. Overnight stay at the same hotel as on the first night. Connected to the mainland by a causeway, the island is bordered by clear waters and dotted with lush gardens. You can choose to enjoy the pleasures of the beach. Don’t miss the El-Ghriba Synagogue, the Djerbahood district with its colourful murals, or the fish market when the fishers return, where the stalls overflow with octopus and red mullet.
Scheduled - a traditional cooking class. Learn the basics of Tunisian cuisine in a charming guest-house. Scheduled: salads and mechouia, egg brick, fish couscous and mint tea.

Drive to the airport, return the car, then fly home.
