Greece - Crete
100% customisable for you
Upon arrival, pick up your rental car and drive to the mountains in the west of the island. On the last few miles, a track winds its way through oleanders, scrubland, olive trees and numerous chestnut trees, leading you to a dry stone village that is perfectly integrated into its surroundings at an altitude of 500 metres. You will stay for three nights in one of the stone and wood houses built on the ruins of old farmhouses, preserving the architectural characteristics of the region. Outside, there are countless intimate corners where you can read, meditate or even take a nap in a hammock. The tavern, which is very well known in the area, serves the best the island has to offer, with a bold and skilful twist. In the evening, as daylight fades, candlelight takes over, making the place even more magical.
From the perch on which your accommodation is built, it is easy to assess your playground. North-western Crete is a rugged region, yet the horizon offers glimpses of sparkling sea and delightful sandy beaches. Tourism has so far snubbed these harsh but fertile lands. This relative isolation works in the area's favour as it remains unspoilt and offers pristine landscapes.
See and do - Hike along the surrounding peaks; walk on the pink sand of Elafonissi beach; sway gently in a hammock; learn the secrets of Cretan cuisine from the hotel chef; dive into the crystal-clear waters of Kedrodasos.
Optional - Day trip and lunch in the heart of the hinterland.
On your itinerary - Private gourmet tour of Chania.. Chania is not only the gateway to the island, but it is also a warm and lively city. Accompanied by a guide, you’ll wander through the pedestrian streets lined with historic sites and colourful shops. During your tour, you can stop to chat and sample some local specialities, including loukoumades (small honey-coated doughnuts), bougatsa (a pastry made with filo pastry, cream and semolina) or olives, herbs and spices.
Optional - Private picnic by the sea.
Drive to the north of the island. On the way, be sure to stop near the village of Fournes, at the foot of the White Mountains (Lefka Ori), to stretch your legs along the paths of the superb botanical garden. Here, there are nearly 20 hectares of fruit trees from all over the world, as well as vines and medicinal plants. The presence of a lake attracts water birds. You may also come across peacocks strutting along the paths as if they owned the place. There is an excellent tavern on site that transforms vegetables, fresh herbs and fruit into delicious traditional Cretan dishes that can be enjoyed while taking in the exceptional view.
Stay for three nights in the heart of an estate where five pretty stone houses that are divided into apartments welcome guests on the hillside, facing the sea. The surroundings consist of olive trees, orchards and vineyards as far as the eye can see. This hamlet is filled with the sweet scent of the terroir, olive oil and orange blossom. Grape harvesting, olive picking, bread baking, cooking... Timeless farm work still occupies everyday life, and yours too if you wish.
Optional - A day in the footsteps of a shepherd.
Surrounded by thousands of fragrant trees, you’ll enjoy a special location between the valley, the mountains and the sea, which can be seen just a few miles away. The surrounding area is full of historical curiosities, such as Zominthos and its great Minoan palace, the archaeological remains of the ancient city of Eleftherna and the Arkadi Monastery. There is enough to keep you busy for the day.
Optional - Visit to a vineyard, tastings and cooking workshop.
On your itinerary - A private tour to discover the secrets of olive oil.. Head to a village near Rethymno to unravel the mysteries of the Mediterranean's green gold: olive oil. Here you will learn all about the history of the olive tree and its fruit, from prehistoric times to the present day. It is a retrospective accompanied by several oils and a 100% local feast of mezzes, cheese and traditional bread.
See and do - In Rethymno, stroll around admiring the Venetian fortress, loggia and port, Egyptian lighthouse and Ottoman mosques, and watch the masters of filo pastry at work in their workshop and perhaps leave with some delicious pastries under your arm.
Head south to the island and stay for two nights in a hamlet of traditional stone houses. It is an isolated location in direct contact with nature. Here, you are far from the crowds and close to the real things. In the centre of the hamlet, the village square serves as a place to rest and socialise. And when the air cools, the fireplace and wood stove take over. The farm and vegetable garden supply the restaurant's kitchen, so the menu changes according to the seasons and harvests. The comfortable and well-equipped rooms are decorated in a charming rustic style.
Dominated by the 1,236-metre Mount Kofinas, you’ll find yourself on the slopes of the Asterousia massif, which is a wonderful balcony facing the intense blue of the Libyan Sea. The isolation of this region makes it a unique place on the island, where time seems to have slowed down. A national refuge during Turkish rule and a hippie haven in the 1970s, the surrounding area attracted lovers of discreet authenticity from very early on. Even religious figures left beautiful frescoes in the sanctuaries of the area.
See and do - The archaeological sites of Phaistos and Agia Triada; take a cooking class at the hotel restaurant; participate in farm life; take a trip to the beach, less than two miles (three kilometres) away; relax by the pool.
Optional - Visit a vineyard and taste vintages with a private sommelier.
Drive to Heraklion, return the vehicle and take a direct international flight back.
