Egypt - Cairo - Alexandria - Fayoum

Spotlight on northern Egypt

From $3700 to $5100 per person for 6 days Price depends on departure city, season, accomodation types and selected activities

Itinerary highlights

  • Six days and three stop-offs to discover the Egypt of the pharaohs and much more
  • A global city, the Mediterranean coastline, a desert oasis: surrounded by Egyptian wonders and making memories.
  • Cairo with a friendly guide, a zar ceremony, an off-road adventure in Fayoum, the Meidum Pyramid: it’s all on your itinerary!
  • Carbon absorption, mobile app with GPS, Concierge service and our personalised recommendations: the extra Voyageurs touch.
The history of ancient Egypt is well known. The glory of the pharaohs resonates throughout the land of the Nile. But it should not overshadow later Egyptian history, or the present day. While you can (and we recommend it) go to Giza and visit Cairo’s museums, you should not miss Islamic Cairo and the modern city, captivating places bustling with life, and bursting with artistic and architectural treasures. Cairo, founded in the 10th century by the Fatimids, is well worth visiting in itself. It’s not just a footnote in the epic story of the pharaohs. Which is what your first stop-off is all about. Next comes Alexandria, founded by Alexander the Great, and for a long time the beacon - both literally and figuratively - of the eastern Mediterranean. And the capital of Egypt. These days, with its nonchalant charm it’s where Cairo’s residents go for a seaside getaway. It still keen on imports of all kinds though. In short, a welcoming, tolerant, curious, critical and cultured city. As symbolised by the revival of the legendary ancient library. Finally, Fayoum Oasis, a vast basin in the desert surrounding Lake Qarun. The area is known for its lush farmland and its patron deity Sobek, the crocodile god. Striking mummy portraits from the Roman period were discovered here, reflecting a sophisticated civilisation. You see large flocks of birds and the skeletons of prehistoric whales left scattered on the sand. It's a wholly unexpected world. While there’s no getting away from the pharaohs this journey is very much about a different Egypt.

Your journey

Your three carefully chosen hotels each offer a perspective on today’s Egypt: an international hotel in Cairo; recent history in Alexandria; and authentic traditions in Fayoum. Each hotel is beautiful and comfortable, reflecting the best accommodation to be found around the Nile and beyond. By the river, by the sea or lakeside, comfort and good vibes are a given. Between Cairo and Alexandria, enjoy first-class train travel on this well maintained part of the railway network. One of the first pleasant surprises on this Egyptian getaway. Then a chauffeur-driven car takes you to Fayoum. Where you enjoy an off-road adventure. Travel arrangements are made to suit the circumstances. This ensures everything runs smoothly and journeys take no longer than necessary. Even though there’s a lot to see on this trip, the pace never leaves you breathless: you don't rush through Egypt, you take the time to enjoy it. A zar ritual, a behind-the-scenes tour of Cairo with a friendly guide, and a day in the Fayoum desert are all on your itinerary. What about ancient monuments? Don't worry, the Meidum Pyramid, which was the prototype for the Great Pyramid of Giza, is there too. And you still have some spare time. To get lost in Alexandria, for example, or meet a charity that cleans the Nile. And if, along the way, you have sudden urge to do something else or there’s a slight hitch, you have the contact details of our on site Concierge service to assist you.

Itinerary

100% customisable for you

Help with the formalities and transfer. Stay for two nights in Zamalek, between the branches of the Nile. The hotel's location is perfect: it offers views of the city and the river. Neither can be reduced to pharaonic history alone. This is precisely what the establishment’s international style expresses: an asserted modernity - aesthetic and cosmopolitan. This is truly delightful and does not prevent you from invoking the spirits of Khufu or Ramses II. In both the common areas and private spaces, you find understated elegance, functional spaces and impeccable service - professionalism at every level. The spa invites you to nurture your vitality and spirit.
Already planned - the zar, a women’s ritual from Cairo. With origins that are perhaps Ethiopian, it was about dealing with possessing spirits. These practices, involving voice and instruments, have since become a musical genre in their own right. This is especially true in Cairo. And above all, it’s a women’s affair. This performance is an opportunity to experience Egypt through its rhythms and trances.

In your itinerary - Cairo like a friend. You have a meeting with a Cairene. They know their intricate city inside out. A brief discussion helps clarify expectations, desires, passions, and every expectation you may have from Cairo. And then, following your guide-friend, immerse yourself in Egyptian daily life. Whether in the traditional cafés, or ahwa, or at the Café Riche; in the Khan al-Khalili souk or designer boutiques; around religious attractions or football stadiums; under the banners of the Ayyubids, Fatimids, Mamluks or Ottomans; and so on. The many facets of Cairo are revealed to you as if you were a local.
Optional extra - The Very Nile association.

You have a transfer to the train station with assistance on site. Take a first-class train to Alexandria, followed by a night on the corniche. From your window, you gaze out over the bay, and the yacht club. In this hotel built in 1929, you step into a chapter of 20th-century Egyptian history. The bar, rich in Chesterfield leather and mahogany, isn't called “Monty” for nothing. The British field marshal came through here, as did many others. Like them, you enjoy impeccable comfort with classic touches.
Few resorts can claim as prestigious an intellectual past as Alexandria: the Greek version of the Bible was developed there, and major Christological debates began in the city. Only a few ancient remains of the city founded by Alexander the Great survive, but its main distinguishing feature - the blending of cultures - is still evident today in its way of life. Alexandria has a genius for otherness; you notice it as you stroll through its architecture, full of surprises and unexpected twists. Built on the site of its predecessor, the Bibliotheca Alexandrina is a major cultural institution under the patronage of UNESCO: a future for a past.
Idea for an à la carte visit: Alexandria, the gateway to Egypt, in private.

Your transfer is by air-conditioned vehicle to the Faiyum Oasis. Stay for two nights southwest of Lake Moeris. Here, the pure forms of traditional architecture make up the main decor, complemented by a few handcrafted items. The result: natural tones, raw materials, and elegant simplicity. You feel immersed in the real Egypt. This is all the more satisfying, as everything is comfortable, starting with the ability to arrange shade and light according to the time of day and your needs. In the surprisingly lush garden, there is a lovely pool for swimming and relaxing. On the roof of the house, there is a terrace where you can watch the sun rise and set over the nearby lake. With the chromatic variations, you enjoy the gentle atmosphere of the evening. At the table, enjoy homemade regional cuisine.

Already planned - The Faiyum Desert in a 4x4. Accompanied by a private guide, you first head to Wadi El-Rayan, where an upper lake flows into a lower lake through spectacular waterfalls. This is a rare natural sight in Egypt, and one that is charming. With a bit of luck, you might spot a rhim gazelle there. Take the opportunity to sail on one of the lakes. Their history and their development go back a long way. They were established for agricultural use in Faiyum. Today, just as in the past, they attract birds - the slender-billed gull, large rock martin, common sandpiper, grey heron, common snipe, and many others. Finally, within the perimeter of Wadi Al-Hitan, you come across the skeletons of archaeoceti - prehistoric whales - lying on the surface of the ground! This remarkable lithic reserve is rightly listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

In your itinerary - On the way to Cairo airport, visit the Meidum pyramid site. It was built by Sneferu (around 2600 BCE), founder of the Fourth Dynasty of the Old Kingdom. This ambitious project was probably dwarfed by its pharaonic proportions. In any case, it was a first, king-sized attempt at building a smooth-sided pyramid. In this respect, Khufu and its limestone casing are in view.
Reception and assistance at the airport, then a direct return flight.

À la carte

This suggested itinerary can be customisable down to the smallest detail, including duration, stops and content. An à la carte menu of experiences is also available to create a journey that reflects who you are.

Cairo - Very Nile
This charity is tackling a significant problem: cleaning up the Nile (and raising awareness of environmental issues). It is based on Qorsaya Island, home to a community of fishermen and farmers. The waste collected from the river is processed and then recycled, as raw material, in the textile industry. A member of the charity will explain the process to you and tell you all about green issues in Egypt.
Optional extra

Private tour of Alexandria
Alexandria is the gateway to Egypt. So, why not start there? Because, nowadays, the port is an airport. And the planes mainly land in Cairo. No matter, you will have a private guide who will tell you all you need to know about the Ptolemaic  city and a bit about its famous residents too. Despite its air of bohemian elegance this is an eternally modern city. Always good fun, friendly and cool. Without feeling the need to boast about its sunny beaches or its long intellectual tradition. Enjoy a sandwich and a creamy  gelato while learning about a street food scene that embodies the way Alexandrians live life to the full. What about attractions? Don't worry there’s plenty of those!
